Coping-Everyone Needs It
Most people find stress overwhelming, so their natural tendency is to try to avoid it altogether. The question is, how realistic is this? Here are some facts about stress to keep in mind when it starts to get the better of you.
Stress is a part of life. It is inevitable. It’s everywhere. In the workplace, at home, on t.v when watching the news. It is a fact of life.
Stress is not all bad. Without some stress in life, most people would become lifeless and fall into a vegetative state.
There are three different types of stress, from a particular serious event, such as an accident, the stress which comes with a specific stage of life, such as marriage, divorce, retirement, having children, middle age. Then there is the stress that becomes a part of daily life for many, such as repeatedly doing things you dislike. That is, until, if possible, you find a way to change it.
Stress becomes Distress when too much is going on all at the same time. It becomes too much to deal with. Learning to Cope is important during these times. Here are some ways to cope:
Take responsibility for coping. It has to come from you. Try to be objective. What needs to change?
Know your own strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself.
Get support while you cope. You don’t have to cope alone.
Try to stay positive. There is always a way even if you can’t see the solution right away.
Keep it realistic. Set attainable goals.
Let go. Try to relax and accept the situation.
Be flexible. If the first solution doesn’t work, try again. Praise yourself for at least trying.
One step at a time. Write it down if it helps.
Watch for red flags. Difficulty sleeping, eating more, drinking more, getting sick more often. Slow down and take a look at your life.
Exercise more. Eating well. Getting enough rest, staying physically active, all these things combined improve your ability to cope.
Relax. Have some fun. Take the much-needed vacation. Take a recreational class. Practice meditation.
When all methods have not worked, it is ok to seek outside help. It is a sign of strength, not a weakness.
